Greetings from Asia

Beitragvon Bayer » 26.11.2013, 10:02

Hi there,

my name is Claus and I have been living in Asia for the past 20 years, riding bikes in many countries - currently riding a F800GS Touratech in the Philippines, total mileage here so far about 40,000 in the Philippines, 10,000+ in Malaysia, Thailand, 2000+ in Laos, 3000+KM in New Zealand, 5000+km in Australia and 5000+ km in China and Tibet.

Am interested in tips for the f800gs, and can give hints on riding in asia.

I rode Tiger 800XC, F650GS, R80GS, R1200GS...

Dear Claus,

A warm welcome in our Forum. You have sent me a PN as well. It sounds impressive what you have done in the past in that part of the world. There may be others which have been riding a bike in Asia, so if you wish the members may comment directly. Most of the guys and girls will understand English.
I guess, you are still living there in Asia. I hope you are well, as there recently happened the tragedy in the Philippines. We are with you with all our best feelings - and financial support.

Best Regards
AP

Welcome to our community from me as well. What made you switch your bikes so many times? I'm especially interested in why you left the R1200GS since I'm playing with the idea of buying one.

Hope your people overcome the aftermath of the typhoon as quickly as possible.

Dear all,

Thank you for all the replies, to answer some of the questions please read below:

First I am german, born in Munich but left Germany early in my life, I came back for Bundeswehr and left again working all around the world. Asia has been my home for 20 years, I lived in Switzerland, the US, Australia, Singapore, the Philippines and Japan.

To the bikes, I love the 1200GS on the road and simple dirt roads but I don't like it for the kind of bumpy roads and off roading you find in many parts in the Philippines so I switched. I would buy one again even if I broke the drive shaft on a 2004 R1200GS (BMW replaced it on warranty). I am interested in the KTM 1190 Adventure, i will loan one and tell you guys how I find it.

The Triumpf Tiger is a better on road machine than the F800GS in my view, fantastic bike :) - I forgot I also had a Tiger 1050 - amazing engine but I did not like the handling.

Now to the Typhoon, it is really bad, I have been riding in all those places and it is after a war now. You all could see that the local government is not capable to help and thankfully Germany, Australia and the US have been instrumental to get help and supplies here.

Lufthansa by the way send 30 doctors and 25 tonnes of supplies the next day after the typhoon hit, did not get any publicity I believe but that was the first medical team on the ground together with Australian military.

So thank you Germany and thank you Lufthansa,

Need to run,

Tschuss
